The SureFire 6P Original Flashlight is a compact (palm size) high-intensity incandescent flashlight for tactical, self-defense, and general use. Produces a smooth, brilliant, pre-focused tactical-level beam with four times the light of a big two D-cell flashlight; bright enough to temporarily blind and disorient a person by impairing his night-adapted vision. Light output may be nearly doubled with optional P61 lamp. Small size and high output make it an excellent everyday-carry light.

Solid, dependable flashlight

Not fancy. Just a rock solid piece of tactical equipment. I added an LED module to increase brightness and runtime. I could have gone directly to the newer 6PX, but I like the feel of the original.
Bright, simple, reliable

A classic light with a lot of potential left in it
August 17, 2015
The old 6P is a classic light. It's a little dated but solid. The fit and finish is truly outstanding. I especially like the tactical switch; you press for momentary activation and twist for constant on. I think this is ideal for a light of this kind. Most of the time I need light for just a few moments and this arrangement minimizes the risk of having it turn on in your pocket or pack leaving it dead when you really need it. Yet you still have the option for constant on for tasks requiring both hands (e.g. changing a tire). Realistically, incan lights are almost obsolete for most users today. LED lights offer better run time, higher output and less heat than incans and they're much more durable. Still, even the best LED light can't match the color rendition of an incandescent. However, I consider the 'killer app' for the 6P to be as a host for an aftermarket drop-in such as the superb Malkoff M61S (available here at Battery Junction). This provides the best of both worlds; the quality and style of a classic Surefire with a bombproof high output LED light engine. The only downsides to the 6P are that it's a tad bulky for a two-cell light and the bezel is a bit sharp.
Superb fit & finish. Superior switch. Tons of aftermarket upgrades available. Fantastic color rendition (an area where incandescent lights excel).
A little heavy & bulky for a two cell light. Dated styling.

Decent for an incandescent torch
April 2, 2015
I've had my 6P for over twenty years. Surefire definitely makes high quality products. At the time, LED torches were not around and 65 lumens was a lot. It went through batteries like crazy and if you dropped the torch, the bulb would break more often than not. After a few years, various LED drop-ins were made available and I bought a few of them. The output is much brighter, runtime is much longer, and of course, dropping your torch doesn't mean a broken filament anymore. The tail cap switch needs to be backed off enough to make sure it doesn't accidentally turn on.

Great tactical light!

I love the design of the 6P original. The P60 bulb has good output, a very tough anodized finish, and would recommend this light to anyone looking for the best quality.
An awesome light for design and function.

Rugged and simple
July 31, 2014
I have one of these in the silver color issued to me by my employer. It has endured some very unfortunate treatment - dropped more than once, hard enough to dent the bezel, but it still works. The switches on these are screw-in simple contacts. When screwed in to a certain point, you can activate momentary-on by depressing the tailcap. There is no clicky-switch. If you want constant on, just screw the tailcap in until it comes on and stays on. If you want to lock it out so it can't accidentally come on in your pocket or bag, screw it out until momentary-on can't be activated by pushing on it. My biggest complaints with these lights are 1.) They eat batteries quickly; 2.) The brightness, while better than a krypton bulb, doesn't compare with the current LED's available 3.) The bulb life is not all that long. What I did with mine: I bought one of the cheap one-mode 6P LED lamp assemblies made in China ($10 or less), and dropped it in. (note- the retainer/bezel may not screw in as far as it was with the Xenon factory bulb assembly - don't force it). Now I have a light that is several times as bright, and in which the batteries last several times as long. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. I have not had any problems with it at all. Those cheap lamp assemblies differ in dimensions, brightness, and quality. The Surefire LED conversions are almost as expensive as buying another flashlight, and if you insist on Surefire, then I recommend you just buy a Surefire LED light to begin with. I would still recommend this, like I would recommend a Maglite. It is a good quality light with a good company backing it. It does have its limitations though. The above is how I dealt with them. As I said, do so at your own risk. I may buy one of these while they are still available, just to have one to convert (since I will eventually have to give back the one my employer issued to me). btw, they're not getting my LED assembly, lol.
Tough Simple Compact
Very short battery life Brightness doesn't compare with LED models Bulb life isn't the greatest

I've used one of these at work for 8 years. Its beat up pretty bad but its still as bright as day one and not a scratch one on the glass lens.
Well built with a tail cap on/off button
Eats CR 123 takes 2 and they last about an hour.
