Focus Adjustable

A simple twist of the head switches focus between flood and spotlight

You wanted it, and Fenix has delivered. Most newer lights give lumen output priority over good old fashioned intuitive design, but the creators of the FD40 said nuts to that and have made a light that can easily transition between a spotlight and flood light setting. The spotlight setting pushes the extension of the light's beam to a full 300 meters, great for long range spotting, search and rescue and signaling. When in flood mode, the light is cast directly in front of the user at a 78° angle that is best used for area lighting and exploration in tight quarters. Additionally, there is also a strobe option that is easily activated by pressing and holding the stainless steel side switch.

The FD40 is a solid hunk of aircraft grade aluminum accented with a stainless steel size switch and a tempered glass lens. What more can we say? Best focus light!

This is by far one of the better and higher quality focus lights around and it has a good solid head twist to focus and not a focus ring on the neck of the light or one of those slide head up and down type of light, this light has a good solid twist that's not too tight to turn and it works perfect although it only twists mabe a third way around the light and not one of them infinite twist type of focuses, this is perfect and of course it's a FENIX

  • The focus feature of this light is a disappointment, It will focus to complete flood but does not focus out nearly small enough. Basically not a good thrower but great flood light. Should focus to pin point if needed. Also the auto reduction from Turbo to high in 3 min also not desirable.

Fenix FD 40, suggestion for the use

(I apologize for my English, but I write from Italy) I am writing to give an advice of use to Blindjim from Florida, regarding its review. Blindjim, if you read the instructions, the torch has instead an electronic locking function (activated by a long press for more than 3 seconds the switch) against accidental actuation. 👍

  • Exceptional product!It is absolutely Very bright! Have an adjustable light beam, from flood (truly!) to a spotlight (but with very peripheral spill !) Unlike other "adjustable" torches (like all the LED Lenser, that to have the zoom function, had to give up submersibility..!..) this Fenix it is submersible to over 2 meters like all other Fenix! It works with 2 batteries, including the powerful 32650 (allowing record times of operation!) It is exceptionally robust and thoroughly well-built!

Almost perfect...

dThe on/off button is not the best idea as to location or type. The light can be activated without your knowledge while in its holster. Adding a slide to lock in or out the power sw. or creating some series of touches as in activating the Strobe would over come this inadvertent and needless battery drain, activation scenario.

Highly recommend keeping the light memory setting to its lowest output mode, which means one will be forced to stroll thru the modes to reach the desired output level, but for me, battery life is the more important property of an EDC lights feature set.

The Lanyard hole on the tail cap is ridiculously tiny. DO NOT throw away the tab and wire hanging out of the hole when you unpackage the item! If you do, fear not. Using a good solid twist tie or fishing line will save the day as one or the other will surely be necessary to thread the lanyard into the tail cap. You will have a lot of trouble trying to insert the lanyard into the hole without it/them.

It will roll quite readily when laid onto its side and although the aspect for attaching it to some small tripod or other device is one of it’s features, just who buys a tripod for their EDC or TACTICAL handheld Flashlights?

As for operation….
It works as advertized. A tight focused beam, or one which floods pretty evenly. Naturally, in the highest range of flood, throw distance is sacrificed.

The variety of lighting modes is very good and well engineered, although having the option of a secondary sw. to engage some other modes beyond the single on/off sw would be very nice. As well, relocating this on/off sw. or even reconfiguring it to be less sensitive and unable to be activated unbeknownst to you, would be a definite boon to this units abilities.

On the whole it is a very well thought out and INHO a nice sized device but given it operates with longer run times using the fatter 26650 power source, its girth is is something one needs to get used to after carrying longer, thinner EDC lights. It is easy to use, carry and store in any event, and until something else comes along with the mentioned upgrades I am growing to like it pretty fast. It is now my most used EDC LED.

Fenix has again demonstrated why they are and industry leader. The FD40 has it all. Battery flexibility, Run Time, ability to focus the light beam and Output in a package that can still fit in the pocket of your baggy pants
