Fenix HL55

LED Headlamp

The HL55 LED headlamp from Fenix is the latest to join the headlamp party. Weighing in at just four ounces and offering an optimum output-to-weight ratio, the HL55 is great for those long adventures where hands-free illumination is needed. The HL55 is made from aircraft aluminum with a premium Type III hard-anodized finish, so it can withstand several impacts and harsh weather. The all metal housing is designed to dissipate heat allowing for a nice cool experience. You can adjust the beam where needed by tilting the headlamp up to 160°. The headlamp can also be removed from the strap, and used as a regular flashlight, allowing for additional light positioning options not possible with other headlamps.

Lighting Technology

The HL55 is equipped with a neutral white XM-L2 LED from CREE, which outputs a blazing 900 lumens up to 116 meters. With four brightness levels, plus a burst mode, the HL55 gives you total command over the output and run time. Speaking of runtime, the HL55 can operate for up to 150 hours, while in Eco mode. Accessing the user interface is done by the side switch, which will cycle from the 900 lumen Turbo mode all the way down to the 10 lumen Eco mode. To access the 900 lumen burst mode, you simply press and hold the button for over one second to activate. After 30 seconds, the HL55 automatically returns to the previous output.

Flexible Options

Powering the HL55 are either two CR123A batteries or a single 18650 battery. A single 18650 equals the power of four AA batteries, but only half the size and weight. Reverse polarity protection ensures you safety in case the batteries were improperly installed.

A must have
House is located in a semi rural setting on 7 acres over looking a river valley in southwest Missouri . I'm 65 years old, trying to avoid sun exposure, so I mow the entire 7 acres at night, as well as all the weed trimming .I bought a Fenix HL55 headlight to use with my Grasshopper mower to improve visibility due to the speed and maneuver ability the mower was capable of.Wow what a difference! The speed and precision increase I was able obtain was remarkable, because I could see so much better, and further.Run times of the light are impressive as well! I have used this light ALOT this Summer. It just flat works! By one, you will see what I mean.
ProsBuild quality,run times, brightness ,comfort.
ConsHaven't bought one for my wife yet

A solid performer
I've had quite a few headlamps as a home inspector, and I'm hard on equipment. This headlamp has held up nicely to crawlspaces, attics, and being dropped. I really like this light. I'd buy it again.
ProsGreat light output with good choices of levels of brightness, no wires hanging to get broken, and no separate heavy battery case.
ConsCannot focus the beam

Great light for the money
This headlamp is super light and puts out a lot of warm usable light. I also have a Surefire Maximus that I love and this light is definitely comparable at a quarter the cost. Overall the reflector is clean and give a nice flood pattern with a very minor Hotspot. The build quality of the light it's self is decent, however the attachment plate is plastic and not padded it's not super bothersome but after a few hours it gets old. The output settings are great for most situations you encounter, my only gripe is if the light is on and you want to turn on "turbo" the light will momentarily turn off and then go to turbo. The button is sensitive which is nice but you need to lock it out when packing away and the only means you have is a manual lockout by backing off the battery cap 1/2-3/4 turn. I'm very happy with the light and it's now a permanent future in my toolbox allowing my maximus to be used for fun again.
ProsAccepts 18650s LED has awesome output and warm enough to be useful in moist environments Super light even with an 18650 Great price
ConsAttachment plate is plastic including the retention clip seems cheesey but functions for now No padding on attachment plate

Fenix HL55
I love this light. It is powerful enough for hiking with my dogs at night. Even in the sub zero temperatures we are having. Battery life is great. The four levels seem to be well spaced. Great tool!
ProsLight weight. Long life. Useful light levels.
ConsNone yet.

Love Fenix
Due to my night fishing in Hawaii, I've gone through a number of headlights over the years. After the halogens and kryptons, along came the LEDs, but the Fenix HP11 led was the first true breakthrough for power and convenience. With its 277 lumens and diffuser it is the perfect fishing camp light and still my first choice. The HL55 is the perfect compliment for the 11 as it can give that 900 lm burst if needed and has no external battery pack. Running on a 18650 loaded in front let's me sleep with it on for quick get up if something hits my pole and rings the bell. Battery Junction with the promos I got made this a super deal. Should have bought 2.

Excellent product
Just took the light on it's first cave trip, and I am impressed. It is tough, light, and really puts out the lumens. Compared to a Zebra light,it has more throw, but similar output.I cannot imagine anyone being disappointed with this light, especially for the price. BUY IT!

Have not gotten to use it, but they asked for a review...
Feels like a sturdy product, and had get lighting in the living room at 10am on Christmas morning. Bought this for my husband for when we go shrimping at night. We probably won't go until April/May.

Potential is there, but not there yet
PROS: This headlamp has a "warm color" to it allowing for accurate color rendering and has a mixture of spot and flood. It will light up a small to medium size yard. It is more flood than spot. Beam pattern is flawless. No artifacts or holes in the beam pattern. It will use most Protected 18650 size batteries and I used it for 3 hours continous on "High" at the 420 Lumen mode with a 2600 mah battery before losing High mode. The light does appear to have Constant Brightness for the most part. The light is fairly small. CONS: Not comfortable. The mount for the LED that fits on the forehead will dig in, and as a friend described it, leave an Anvil indentation or mark. Fenix cut indents into the mount but did NOT insert any padding, So the indents dig into the skin. It is Really not comfortable unless a hat or cap is worn underneath the light. No Battery status indicator, other than losing the higher modes as battery weakens. You Must turn turn the battery knob counterclockwise a quarter to half turn to Lockout the switch if putting the light in a pocket, backpack etc... To keep from accidentally activating it.

900 lumens - you sure about that Fenix?
I have had a few Fenix lights. Most have performed reasonably well, and the brightness/lumens ratings seemed to be within reason - real world in other words. This headlamp however - 900 lumens is really a stretch. Put this light up against the TerraLux TL-50 which I also own and purchased from Batteryjunction, turn them on high. Case Closed. Fenix needs to re-evaluate their output for this light and bring it back down to reality. Otherwise it puts a dent in their credibility for this particular product.
ProsWell made, reasonably priced. Good tool for very up-close work.
ConsNowhere near 900 lumens on highest setting, and even the 450 lumens advertised output level is suspect. 'Throw' is non-existent, but it is hard to fault the light in that category since the reflector is so small to begin with.
