Folomov 18650S Flashlight

6 Brightness Levels, 3 Tactical Outputs, 2 Usage Modes

The Folomov 18650S flashlight is a modern engineering feat with dozens of features all accessed by a single tactical tail switch. Six brightness modes ranging from a 900 lumen turbo to a 0.5 lumen moonlight offer up to 700 hours (over 29 days!) of versatile illumination. Switch between illumination and tactical usage modes for wide-ranging light options or quick, momentary or constant on controls. Whether you're in close quarters or checking under the hood of your car, the 18650S supports your efforts best.

The Nichia 219D LED supports the light with a maximum output of 900 lumens, bright illumination that cuts through the darkness. The 170m (557ft) throw paired with a quality IPX8 waterproof design and 1-meter impact resistance makes the 18650S a solid choice for outdoor activities.

Folomov 18650S

Great price for all the output options. Once you get the hang of it the tail switch isn't hard to control. Fun to mess around with and helps a lot with working in the garage or the backyard. Would order from Battery Junction again. Five stars from me.

Nice light with some great features.

Many reviews I've seen for this light seem to state the the UI is a little confusing. While I have yet to use the tactical side, the EDC side of the light is pretty straightforward once you get an understanding of how it works.

If you turn the light on in moonlight mode and then do a quick press to access your last mode, any subsequent quick press of the button will lower the output until you get to the 10 lumen mode, then of course output will increase. If you turn the light on in moonlight mode and its at the 10 lumen mode, a quick press of the button will have no effect on output so you accidentally increase the output if you did not intend to.

Turning the light on in memory mode, a quick press to turn the light on as opposed to the long press to go to moonlight, any subsequent quick press will increase the output from the last memory settings. Once you get this concept down, this is actually a great light.

The size is nice and l like the fact that you can lock out the switch with a triple press although I have yet to have it accidentally turn on in my pocket. I plan to get a larger capacity battery for it as right now it only has a 2600 mAh battery.

Some nice features and price-point, but with some flaws.

This light is small. It measures just under 4” in length. It comes with two spare o-rings, lanyard, pocket clip already attached, Folomov 18650 2600 mah micro USB battery (69.5mm long) and a 32” long micro USB charging cable. The battery came installed with a plastic barrier to prevent accidentally being turned on during transport. The battery came charged to only 3.69v and took 2.5 hours to completely charge to 4.21v. There is some machining to the head/bezel to prevent rolling, but it is not very aggressive. The pocket clip helps prevent rolling better. The flashlight body has very light knurling. There are still smooth portions of the body that make the already short flashlight, a bit hard to get a good grip onto. The light can tail-stand. The tailcap only takes 1.25 turns to attach and come off of the body. I would have liked to have seen at least two complete turns before the tailcap disconnects from the body.

I ran a runtime test on the light (with an Olight 18650 2600 mah battery at 4.20v) on Turbo/900 LU. The stats claim five hours on Turbo. (I found this hard to believe.) After two minutes, the flashlight became too hot to hold, especially the head/bezel. After a total of five minutes, the light turned off by itself. Most likely an overheating protection feature. I took the battery out and let the light cool down for about three minutes then tried it again. It functioned fine, but shut down again after about five minutes. At this point, I discontinued my testing on Turbo.

I decided to try a runtime test on High/300 LU with another fully larger Olight 18650 2600 mah battery at 4.20v. The light still got very hot, but not as hot as in Turbo. After 30 minutes, it was hot enough to want to either wear gloves, or not hold it for more than a few seconds. The stats claimed 7 hours on High. I found it dimmed considerably after 2.5 hours. All modes were still available at that time. I checked it again at 3 hours and no other level modes were available. Only the current dimmed High. I also found, once I turned it on, it would not turn off unless I took the battery out. I let the light cool down for a couple minutes then put in another fully charged 18650 battery and the light functioned correctly. Disappointed, I decided to end my testing at that time.

I found the UI different. In ILLUMINATION mode, you cycle through each level, from Ultra low, Low, Med, High and Turbo. While still on, you continue to cycle through Turbo, High, Med, Low and Ultra low. There is a memory mode where you can access that memorized mode with a quick single press of the tailcap. Cycling through modes also picks up where it was turned off. Quickly pressing the tailcap twice will access the SOS/Strobe/Beacon modes. The Beacon mode was strange also. It wasn’t like most flashlights that blink every few seconds. The Folomov took five seconds between blinks. The blink is more of a ramp up to Med level and then ramp down to off. It takes over a second to turn on and off instead of the usual spilt second. The other mode is called TACTICAL mode. In this mode, the light only has one mode of Turbo. SOS/Strobe/Beacon are not available in TACTICAL mode. There is a lockout feature that works well. The light comes with a timer feature (not available in TACTICAL mode either). You have the option to have the light turn off in either 3, 6, 9, 27 and 30 mins. The timer worked just fine.

The beam tint is Neutral White and very much on the warm side. The center hotspot is defined, but not overly so. I was disappointed the spill light was not very bright.

This was my first Folomov flashlight. I liked the price-point. It has some nice features and comes with all the accessories one would expect (except a holster). The fact that the runtime stats claimed were so different from my testing, bothers me enough to not want to buy another Folomov at this time.
