A Top Contender for the Most Durable 1-AAA Pocket Light
The Klarus MI02 5MM 1-AAA flashlight rivals the long-standing champ of 1-AAA Pocket Lights, the Fenix E01. In fact, the overall construction of the Klarus mimics that of the Fenix until you get to the very tail end. The design intent is for an incredibly dependable, low but generally adequate brightness, exceptionally long lasting run-time, bullet-proof build light. Can't say if the Klarus mimics the Fenix with a fully potted head assembly, but it's likely. Twisty Switch operation eliminates standby current drain. O-rings provide a water-tight seal for an IPX-8 rating. Power this with a cell that gives decades of shelf life and you have a winner! If you consider that most uses for this class of light will be brief, say 30 seconds to find stuff in dim light or darkness, or look at things more closely that are "inside", like a under counter cabinet or inside equipment access panels, then a simple, single level, single AAA light like the Klarus MI02 or Fenix E01 with their 13 Lumen brightness and quoted ~17 hour run time means 17hrs/battery x 60min/hr x 60sec/min x 1 use/30sec = ~2000 uses/battery. Now my experience with the Fenix E01 certainly has demonstrated that with an Energizer L92 1200mAH L92 Lithium Iron cell, one or two uses per day of my EDC has found years of service before the light is noticeably too dim for my needs and a new cell is needed. Note, too, that this light shouldn't be used with an Alkaline cell - it might LEAK after so long, nor a NiMH rechargeable - it will likely self discharge more quickly over so long a potential service life. This is the perfect emergency gear, Bug Out Bag, or Glove Box stashed light with a Lithium Iron cell - a dependable light in time-of-need after a decade or two of sitting there just waiting. Tests done by others demonstrate that the Klarus matches, and in some ways beats the Fenix in this regard. Remember that the specs, and some tests, are running these lights to about 0.1 Lumens, but the flat discharge of a Lithium Iron cell moves that "dimming down" portion of the curve more to an abrupt dimming. In early 2015 Candle Power Forum member run4jc posted "A 5mm Light Challenge", torture testing 5 brands of 5mm lights... great read... only the Klarus and Fenix survived the brutality. The driver design of the Klarus seems better able to both beat its fresh battery brightness specs AND provide continuous output with a declining Alkaline cell (other brands, including the Fenix E01, need a bit of off time for the Alkaline cell to "recover" cell voltage level in order to drain further. Ok... so on to the specific review. The Klarus, as mentioned mimics the physical design of the Fenix, especially at the head - BUT, the trick of using a Chapstick Brand lip balm "top" as a pop-on diffuser to create an effective area light doesn't work as well with the Klarus, its bezel rim seems rounded just a bit too much to pop-on the Chapstick diffuser securely. However, both will accept the County Comm Maratec AAA light's silicone glow-in-the-dark diffuser (available separately from their AAA flashlight). At the other end, the Fenix has a clever "Y" shaped tail that allows a split ring to be attached, but still flop to the side to afford "tail standing"... makes an effective candle lantern with a diffuser popped on. However the Klarus has a "O" shaped tail that might afford a more stable tail-stand, but not with a split ring attached. The BEAM of the Klarus is much more neutral (less blue), and far more uniform and circular than that of the Fenix. From an "in use" standpoint the Klarus is clearly superior. Kudos to Klarus. The initial (new battery) BRIGHTNESS of the Klarus MI02 noticeably exceeds that of the similarly specified Fenix E01. The O-ring seal of the Fenix E01 is a larger thickness, likely providing a longer life and better seal, but the O-ring of the Klarus is not skinny or wimpy by any means. The head of the Klarus has a silicone rubber ring that seems intended to provide polarity reversal protection or cushioning... the Fenix does not. The twisty switch action of the Fenix appears a bit more "giving", affording the ability to momentarily actuate the light in one hand. This can be done with the Klarus, too, This momentary actuation is done either by "compressing" the head to the body using thumb and side of the forefinger to pull/compress the light into the hand, or by "flexing" the head with thumb pressing it toward the side of the forefinger while holding the light in the hand.
ProsExtremely durable and reliable - passes the Rock Tumbler, Dish Washer, Freezer, Oven, and Brick Wall tests (courtesy of Candle Power Forum member run4jc) Good Beam - adequately bright for most EDC uses, good circular shape, good neutral color Smooth Operation Affords One-Hand Momentary Actuation and easy One-Hand Twist for Full On Tail Stands (without split ring) Can use (with care) Chapstick Top as diffuser; will use County Comm's Maratec AAA GID Silicone Diffuser
ConsTail end ring design prevents tail stand when split ring is attached - can be fixed by cutting slot(s) in the tail ring A few dollars more than the Fenix E01 - but worth that for the superior beam output Doesn't come with an Alkaline cell, but shouldn't be used with one - for this class of EDC a Lithium Iron AAA cell is just the ticket for optimum performance and run time.

.22 cal of lights
Great small light for when the power goes out. Will definitely get you around at night, going downstairs to check the fusebox, enough light for any "personal space" work. Easy to hold with your mouth if you need a third hand. perfect for preserving the battery or your "big" flashlight.
ProsRELIABLE !!! small, easily fits in pocket, plenty of light for personal space like reading, walking in the dark, looking for something in car at night (dim enough to preserve night vision)
ConsDefinitely small and low powered...but better than not having one
