I expected a head lamp. Turns out, it's my favorite EDC!
Every now and then, manufacturers get it right. I bought the HC30 as a head lamp but it turns out this is now my EDC. I find the switch options to be intuitive and I particularly like the simple "lock out" feature of the battery cap. This light is replacing my Sunwayman S10A, which is a very handy light in its own right. A major feature is the 18560 rechargeable battery - very long life, lots of power. the Sunwayman is limited to the AA or 14500 size. I frequently use the "moon glow" level of light and I love having the super bright beam as well. The form factor of this light is nearly an exact match to the Sunwayman except that the Nitecore is a right angle style. I wasn't sure about using a right angle light for EDC but the included pocket clip makes all the difference. Now, I can clip it to my shirt, in a pocket, or on the bill of my cap. White v Neutral: I have both the "cool" white and the "neutral" white style. I wasn't sure it would matter but I am now a fan of the neutral white. It easier on my eyes and seems to make colors look better. I think the cool white would be better for signaling and it seems to be a little brighter but I don't know for sure. I dropped both my lights one time each, 5 feet to a hardwood floor. Didn't seem to phase them.
ProsVery compact, uses 18650 battery.
ConsNone so far.

Nitecore HC30
I caught this on a sale and jumped on it. I wanted a neutral white headlamp with the beacon and SOS functions. This headlamp fits the bill. The user interface takes a bit to get used to where it's a bit different than an olight. With a bit of use it's not too hard to get a handle of. It's plenty bright and very light for an 18650 light. It's very bright and I like the range of modes including the moonlight setting. The 3 special modes are also useful especially if you decide to edc it. It comes with a pocket clip if you choose to edc. I also like the flexibility that it can take 2 CR123s or an 18650.
ProsModes, Neutral White, Bright, Light, Flexibility in batteries
ConsUser interface takes a bit to get used to

Bought this to replace a Fenix HL in which the plastic endcap broke. This lamp is solid aluminum.; nothing to break. Super bright, takes either 123's or 18650 primary cells. So far I love it. Time will tell if the quality is there but first impressions are positive.

Very good headlight but no clip included with mine
I have several headlights, including the Fenix HP11 (277 LU), Princeton Tec Apex Pro (200 LU), eGear Focus Control 200 (138 LU) and the Streamlight HP Trident (50 LU). The 1000 LU HC30 is by far the brightest and best. It is comfortable to wear. Not too front-heavy. It feels secure due to the top strap. I got mine in Cool White. The tint is not overly on the blue side. The center spot is larger than that of my Nitecore P16 which is a thrower (960 LU) but not as wide as my Nitecore EC4S (2150 LU) which is a floody. The HC30 has a nice spill light that is very bright as well. It has a very good combination of flood and throw. The 100 degree beam gives ample peripheral lighting. The levels are well spaced except for the lowest of 1 LU. I feel anything less than 5 LU is basically useless. The UI takes some getting used to. Turning the unit OFF and ON, getting to the memorized setting or HIGH mode are definitely not the most common method to cycle through the levels with the HC30. If you forget about the long press required to turn the unit OFF, you run the risk of leaving the torch ON in the lowest mode of 1 LU. On HIGH, the head of the light will get hot in less than one minute. It got so hot, I could not touch the head of the light. You do not really feel the heat while the unit is on your head and pointing forward though. The torch can be rotated in its rubber mounting, as opposed to ratcheting into place like many other headlights. This allows for a wider range of positions. I fear the rubber mounting loops may break over time and then the user will have to either buy a replacement strap or Jerry-Rig/modify a new set-up. Hopefully, the rubber mounting will last for a very long time with normal usage. The description of the HC30 on the Battery Junction website shows an O-Ring, switch cover and stainless steel clip are included as accessories in the bundled package (which I bought). The HC30 sold alone list two spare O-Rings, switch cover and stainless steel clip and they are shown in the photo in the description. The manual (dated 20151009), which I downloaded for the HC30 from the Nitecore website lists a spare O-Ring, switch cover and clip. I was disappointed to not receive the clip. When I called Battery Junction and asked about it, I was told they needed to update their website because the manufacturer does not include the clip with the HC30. (I did receive two spare O-Rings and a switch cover). I was also told the manual does not list a clip but does list the spare O-Ring and switch cover. I checked the manual that came with my HC30 (dated 20150908), and sure enough, it does not list the clip. I did see the clip available at Nitecorestore.com for $5.95 though. Four stars because of the lack of the clip.

Best headlight ever
This is my EDC, I use it extensivley at work for long periods of time. This is also my backpacking headlight when I'm section hiking on the Appalachian Trail and other places as well. I've had this light for over a year now haven't had a single issue, I will replace it with the same if ever lost or broken. I use the Nitecore 1865 3400mah rechargeable battery only charge it about once a month.

Very bright idea.
Pleased that the headband did not come in camouflage. My intent was not to use it for sneaking around in the dark woods. Working on Harley's at times requires seeing what your working on. This satisfies that requirement. Lit up in the Idaho Rockies.

A Handy, Convenient and Very Portable Headlamp
Bought the HC30 for its small size, very light weight, multiple capabilities, and range of light levels for use in confined spaces and out in the field. Disliking heavier headlamps, I've found the HC30 to be comfortable and unobtrusive when worn. With Its compact dimensions, it can easily be stored anywhere for easy access and makes for a great "Everyday Carry" light. The clip allows it to be put into a shirt or pant pocket (I also bought a small Nitecore carrying case from Battery Junction that fits perfectly on a belt or pack) or to position it for use. A short cord can also be attached to the clip as a carrying strap or to hang the unit. Being such a small light, one would expect the beam to be more of a flood pattern which works well for relatively large areas. As one of its applications, I use it in strobe mode as a bicycle light by mounting it on one of the commercially available molded rubber/velcro mounts (or even some neoprene padding w/velcro wrapped around the handlebars). The different functions are easy to learn and battery life has been quite good using a Nitecore 189. It's such a small, handy and useful light that I bought a second one from Battery Junction as a readily available back up.
ProsVery comfortable as a headlamp; very versatile; useful range of light levels, portable and easily stored until needed; clip adds utility

Will the real Tiny Monster! please stand up
I'm ordinarily not a fan of Nitecore's strategy for normal operation of their flashlights. Their involved combinations of clicking, double clicking, holding and half clicks are both a nuisance and troublesome to recall immediately in emergency situations. However for EDC or around the property casual use such things are no concern here. This head lamp definitely justifies itself exceedingly well. On a number of accounts. The periscope array allows for a number of orientations.on shirts, belts, pants, bags, and of course the included head band. The enclosed clip is how I use this tiny Monster LED. Two grooves enable 180 degrees of flip to the lamp arrangement, up or down, inside or outside a garment or accessory. The construction is quite solid and operation simple enough with the control always accessible atop the head piece. As for brightness and alternative situational scenarios, this emitter shines! The HC 30's 5 settings for brightness are plenty for up close and medium distance, nearly hands free use. Its 3 incidental dedicated situational settings could come in handy especially the Strobe. To operate: The first click always defaults to firefly, each subsequent click cycles thru all 5 brightness modes. Press and hold for one sec to shut down and enter the last used mode into memory When off, pressing and holding for one sec returns to the last mode used. Emergency modes Entering the emergency modes with a relatively quick double click always begins at the Turbo Strobe mode. Single clicks thereafter shuttles you through the balance of the emergency modes. Secondly is S.O.S., then the last emergency mode is the flashing beacon locator mode which blinks on periodically every few seconds. Memory to the last used setting is retained despite entering and leaving the Emergency settings, provided you press and hold rather than click. The run times are very good considering. You have to see it work to believe just how powerful it is in action. Naturally, there are inherent compromises due to its stature, but for an all around go anywhere anytime multi function good spread of light does a lot of things very well, device, this one is a winner. This one is going with me where ever I go now and I suppose that makes its own statement. I'm not a fan of the head band as you may have guessed. It seems Nitecore overlooked a couple of items during that design though it is most serviceable I'm just self conscious wearing it in casual situations. Nitecore could have included another pocket clip too. It feels sturdy and time will tell. I fear losing it more so than it breaking. Perhaps the HC30's best feature set rests in its size. A large feature set in a tiny, easy to use and manipulate quite convenient package which tries to cover all the bases a person might encounter throughout the course of their day. And why not take it everywhere? You don't even notice the weight and it feels good in the hand as well. Throw in a strong rechargeable protected 18650 and you are set! It can ride anywhere nearly disappearing or remain hidden in your hand while you get to your car in a dark parking lot or when at work in areas of no available lighting. Its fun to use covertly too as it hides so well in the hand..

Bought it as an EDC for the wife. Very bright, and easy to use. It has an interesting feature for turning on, as it can go right to full brightness if the last mode was dim - by holding the power button on for a couple seconds. It will come on dim, and then go right to full bright and stay there. A quick click on puts it right to the last mode used.
