Useful, Flexible EDC Utility Light
December 31, 2016
I purchased both the Niteye JC10 and JA10 lights, and have reviewed the JA10 version as well. I've also purchased the JetBeam H10A, which is very similar to the Niteye JA10. All three are extremely useful and flexible right angle utility lights, the Niteye's are sold as just that - right angle, magnetic base and screwed on pocket clip mount, variable brightness plus strobe utility lights. The JetBeam adds with a good headband for use as a headlamp and sports a low brightness red blinking LED for finding the headlamp in the dark. The Niteye JA10 and JetBeam H10A may be a bit more useful than the Niteye JC10 only in that they use standard AA size cells. Note that the Niteye JC10 cannot use an RCR123A/16340 cell.
All three are attractive, solidly built, and have good magnetic base strength to keep the lights solid on metal surfaces like machinery, fenders, hoods, etc. The User Interface is very nice, with no visible PWM even though these dim up or down by holding the switch from a very nice low for in-tent or late night walks, to an adequate high for exploring into the distance. Memory lets you keep your desired brightness.
About a 1/2 to 1 second press turns on or off, and once on, a double click brings up the strobe - at the memory level of brightness - so if you want these lights to serve for safety sake when walking in the night, be sure to turn the brightness up so the strobe has good effect if you need it, and practice turning the light on, then invoking strobe... (1/2 sec press on, ~1/2 sec pause, quick double click).
I've noticed that an NiMH or LiFe AA powered H10A or JA10 seems only to operate in strobe at full brightness only after the lights have been mechanically "turned off" by unscrewing the light... once dimmed from max and brightened back to max, their strobe modes don't operate as well. This JC10, however, has no such problem. Perhaps it is the operating voltage of the CR123A and this model's driver design that allows proper operation. If a dependably bright strobe is important to you, perhaps this will tip the scales toward the JC10.
ProsCompact, well built, attractive design Good magnetic base strength for inspections, repairs, emergency light Screwed-on pocket clip to prevent accidental loss by clip popping free Variable brightness down and up with good low (for night time camping needs) and high (for a reasonable throw as a headlamp or flashlight) Memory to return to the brightness you selected Double Click to Strobe once the light is on
ConsStrobe mode requires practice, only available after long-press for on, release, then double click... not the quickest in a time of anxiety Strobe mode runs at the Memory brightness level, so be sure to ramp to high BEFORE you need it! Only uses a CR123A cell, no RCR123A/16340 rechargeable for added oomph at high end Does not include headband for headlight use (see the Nite Ize Headband - it will accept this light in its larger elastic loop)

Flexible EDC Utility Light
December 7, 2016
Bought this during a sale period at a price I couldn't resist. I'm a sucker for the military style angle lights - they're just too flexible and useful to resist. This one isn't one of those thousand Lumen powerhouse lights, but does a great job at a 200 Lumen output with a CR123A. Here's what sold me (again I'll admit, it was the sale price that I couldn't resist): Single CR123A cell operation makes for a small package and a long shelf life at a small (Battery Junction) cell price. The LED and driver make for a very useful variable output range. The screw-on pocket clip makes for a more reliable fastening to pocket or gear straps. The magnetic base affords great utility as an area light outdoors (attached to a knife blade stuck in a tree) or to the underside of your vehicle hood looking at what's wrong on a dark night or on your fender while changing your tire on a dark back road in the middle of nowhere. The Strobe mode is reasonably easy to get to (~1sec click on, then double click). The User Interface for brighten/dim works fine, and affords that selected level as a Memory Mode.
I found the light met my expectations and matched to on-line reviews. Build is excellent, operation is very good. For camping use I married this up with a Nite Ize Head Band with velcro closure and elastic loop to hold various size lights. I also cut a Ranger Band, punched a 1cm hole in it, and fastened it under the clip and over the lens, using a amber-red mylar section to provide a night vision filter for late night walks when camping.
ProsRight Angle Light Utility and Flexibility Durability and Quality of construction AND of screw-on Pocket Clip Variable Brightness with Adequate High and at-the-theater or in-the-tent-at-night Low Magnetic Base affording automative and at-work-site utility Small size for EDC or compact toolkit carry
ConsLight doesn't take RCR123 (16340) batteries, so be sure you have bought enough CR123A's at Battery Junction for your needs. It's brother, the JA10 uses AA NiMH's (bought one of those, too) - less costly long term. While this is clearly a flexible and useful light, the "normal price" would make me think longer, read more, evaluate other reviews more carefully before purchase.

A great little light!

This is the best little light around. It hangs in a button hole, so you can see what you're doing, or stands on something so the light is directional.

Perfect pocket companion
December 19, 2014
This light takes about 3 minutes to read instructions and 5 to set up clip and toss in a cell.
Once you get used to the OUTSTANDING switch and functions one amazing light and the
infinite aka variable output works perfect. Strobe works thru whole output levels, but eases off
a bit below 30 lumens. Perfect for an emergency long run locator beacon.

I am very happy one of these FELL INTO my order cart. An AA version or three will be next
for BDAY gifts for my better friends and family. Great companion light for in pocket or pack.
Hooks right on a shirt pocket for hands free lighting too. Have not tried it to the bill of a ballcap

Nice finish and looks and feels and operates. WELL MADE.
Prosthe switch and smooth operation of variable output and the FEEL of it is outstanding. Does not feel like a CR123 celled light. Small handy and powerful little package.
Consonly reservation may , MAY be the pocket clip. Two small screws to attach it when you on box the light. Not a big deal plus they provide an allen wrench and two spare screws in case one or two end up being lost. Think it should be alright. A CLIP ON CLIP would be nicer.
