Terrible ink cartridges and pocket clip
October 5, 2020
I had high hopes for the OPen-2, considering its high price tag. I am a big fan of Olight products and have dozens of their flashlights and rechargeable batteries. I thought I would give their new pen/flashlight a chance. At first glance, it appears well-made and solid. But that feeling quickly faded away. The pocket clip is much too tight! It will snag and/or tear a shirt or pants pocket very quickly. Bending it is difficult and you run the risk of breaking it off. The first few strokes of the pen made me think it would write very smoothly. What I was not anticipating was the ink running out/stopping after writing out two short shopping lists and a few brief notes in less than a week. I can honestly say I wrote less than one page worth of writing with the new pen and its new cartridge. I thought the flow of ink was possibly clogged at the tip or it was dry and had not completely run out. Keep in mind, the pen was brand new and the ink cartridge came with the pen. I decided to take it apart and found there was still plenty of ink, but it was either too thick or dry to flow to the tip. Perhaps, easily found refills from Parker, Papermate or Pilot would have been a better choice for Olight to use.

The light is all flood and is only good for very close distances. The four different levels are about two more than I really need. A High and Low would have been just fine. The clickie button at the top activates too easily and can be turned on accidentally.

The USB-C cable charges the 110 mAh battery to full in about an hour from completely dead.

The bolt for extending and retracting the pen can be uncomfortable depending on how you hold the pen in your hand. I found myself accidentally writing on my own hand when extending the point because of the way the pen sits in my hand when I deploy it with that same hand. I understand it could not be any higher on the pen because that is where the battery and light is housed and the bottom half of the pen is where the cartridge is.

Overall, I am very disappointed in the OPen-2. For the price, I could have easily bought two Olight i1R2 lights as a compact lighting source and a couple dozen disposable pens from any store and still had money left over!

Does anyone know what kind of ink refill this takes?

While we do not carry a replacement ink cartridge for the Olight Open 2 Rechargeable Flashlight and Pen, we have heard from other customers thatá

the SCHMIDT CL8126 Mini Refillis a compatible refill.
