Olight S2 Baton LED Flashlight

Amazing Output

Experience where power meets portability with the S2 Baton LED Flashlight, Olight's newest addition to the Baton Series. Equipped with a CREE XM-L2 U3 LED, the S2 is able to produce up to an astounding 950 Lumens of illumination while in Turbo Mode as well as 4 other constant brightness options ranging from 400 Lumens all the way down to a 0.5 Lumen Moonlight Mode. Designed to help conserve power, the S2 automatically dims the Turbo Mode to 50 percent brightness after 2 minutes to extend battery life. The flashlight is then able to run for an additional 170 minutes in Turbo Mode after it dims and can run its Moonlight Mode for up to 60 days straight on a single charge while using an 18650 battery. The S2 even features a special Strobe function that can be used as a signaling tool or can be used to disorient or distract a target. All modes can be accessed and shuffled through using the simple side switch, which has a built-in memory function to remember the last output setting you were using.

Rugged Design

Despite delivering such impressive power, the S2 Baton is extremely compact, measuring just over 4 inches in length and less than an inch in diameter. The pint-sized illuminator is able to run on either a single 18650 battery or a pair of CR123A batteries. The S2, with its body crafted from hard-anodized aluminum and its lens made from tempered glass, is impact resistant from up to 1.5 meters and is waterproof and submersible up to 2 meters underwater without damage. To prevent accidental internal damage, the flashlight also features advanced thermal management safety programming and reverse polarity protection to keep both the flashlight and its batteries safe. The S2 even comes standard with a strong magnetic tailcap which can be used to attach the light to a number of metal surfaces for hands-free operation.

Small package, big punch.
So far this little titan has impressed. Great lumen output in such a small frame, with the option of two CR2's or one 18650 for power needs. Going thru the different modes is effortless and everything feels like they're using quality parts. With that said I'll continue to put it through it's paces but this one is a keeper so far.
ProsQuality parts Good lumen output easily accessible

Very nice and powerful small flashlight
It comes with a single sleeve so you can use a single battery. You can use 2 batteries but will need to remove the sleeve from the flashlight first. Light lasts longer with 2 batteries than the model Olight S1 with just one battery. ( of course)
ProsBrightest setting is very bright. Lowest setting is also useful when you need to see but don't want to attract attention or ruin night vision.
ConsOn/off button on side can be hard to feel in a dark environment. I prefer a tailcap. This may turn itself on if in a pocket. Doesn't really need so may modes as you will need to toggle through them if you press the button wrong.

Olight once again makes a great flashlight
Olight products are relatively new but a welcomed addition to my flashlight collection. In a nutshell, the S2 is very bright, well balanced, has a very useful range of light outputs, super compact (for an 18650 light), and just all around useful. IMO, build quality is great and the design is well thought out. For me, I feel that the S2 beam pattern is the best for a general carry pocket light. The TIR provides a very large circle of evenly well distributed useful light for day to day use. I like that the TIR output does not blind you when using the light up close for detail work. It also provides what a describe as a great projection of flood light when illuminating something off in the distance. I use this light every night when walking my dog and it's perfect. The light is very compact for an 18650 and feels very comfortable in the hand. The magnet in the tail is a very nice touch that I wish some of my other lights had. Its super useful for me when I need to go into my shed and I don't have enough hands. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because the thin string on the lanyard that attaches to the tail cap frayed and snapped within a week of me having the light. It might be that the edges in the eyelet on the tail cap might be a little sharp? I've had to tie a knot in the lanyard string to salvage the lanyard.
ProsAll around useful light. Very compact for an 18650 light. TIR beam pattern is perfect for general purpose and close up work.
ConsLanyard attachment loop snapped within a week of use. Might be due to sharp edges in the machining of the eyelet in the light's tail cap.

My favorite torch
I'll try to keep this concise. This light is has excellent beam properties, a good interface, and for the power source it has a tiny form factor. That was my main concern when I found this light. Compared to other 18650 lights, it's a good inch or more shorter. Also I'm getting more use than I thought I would out of the magnetic tail cap. Having a shallow reflector gives it a relatively broad bright spot with excellent spill. It's not a throw monster, but it has plenty of power. The interface is one button. Press to turn on and return to your previous normal(4 levels) light level. To change between those, hold the button down for two seconds. From OFF, press and hold for a moonlight mode. That is about the brightness of my phone, but more focused. Press the button several times in rapid succession and that gives you strobe. I don't have the manual any longer, but there are two turbo modes which I've never really needed. Double click to activate and then double click again for a longer running version. The light will flash twice to indicate it's in that mode. It really only has one "flaw" and that is the side button is not very obvious. That is actually a plus for keeping it in my pocket, but I've considered putting some kind of textured sticker on the button. It's really not that bad, I've just been spoiled by tail switches. One bonus feature is that it includes a plastic sleeve for using 2 CR123 batteries and keeping them from rattling around. I have two of these lights and one of them I use like this for longer shelf life.
ProsSmall form factor Very bright Good beam properties Simple interface Magnetic tail cap
ConsSide button can be hard to find in the dark

Some very good points, but not perfect either
There are things I like about this flashlight and things I do not. The torch is very small and packs a lot of bright light. The levels are well spaced, except for the moonlight mode of .5 lumens. That amount of light is so dim, it is basically useless unless you want to see something very up close like a key hole. The beam pattern is nice. Not too tight of a hotspot and plenty of spill. I would classify the light as floody compared to a thrower. The tint is more on the neutral white side than cool white. The UI is easy to use. You can have relatively instant access to three different modes, such as moonlight with a long press of the switch. You can have the memorized mode with a quick press of the switch and you can have turbo with a double click of the switch. Strobe is available with a quick triple click. Stated battery life in the specs appear to be accurate as far as the two brightest levels go. The ramping down 50% from turbo is done gradually and not in a way where you can see the brightness go from 950 LU to 475 LU noticeably. The manual does not mention turbo mode cannot be used as a memorized mode. If you turn off the flashlight in turbo, ten minutes later, when you turn it on again it will be in the lowest mode. I thought this was a defect, but I purchased two S2 Batons at the same time and they both did this. A search of reviews online and I was able to find this for a fact. I also read one review that stated the switch glows red when the batteries need changing. The manual does not mention that either. I purposely put in two weak primary CR123 3v batteries and sure enough, when the level dropped down to 2.6v, the translucent switch glowed red. Speaking of the translucent switch, the manual does not say anything about the switch lighting up at the brighter levels either. The S2 comes with a nice lanyard with threading device, a spare o-ring, clip and a well designed battery spacer for using two CR123s. I wish it came with a spare switch cover and some type of a sheath or case as well. The S2 can tail stand very easily due to it having a wide enough diameter. The lanyard does not get in the way when you want to tail stand the S2. The magnet in the tail cap can be useful, but it can also cause problems by sticking to things in your pocket such as items on your key chain. The timer feature is different, but I doubt I will ever use it. The pocket clip has two areas where it makes it difficult to slide past your pocket hem or bill of your cap. There is a 90 degree angle and a notch near the closed end that bump up against the hem of a pocket or bill of a cap. I feel the clip could have been made easier to use without those two areas. The S2 can be turned on while in a pocket too easily. I read a review where the person said you can spin the pocket clip to where it covers the switch to prevent accidentally turning it on. This is true but it also makes it almost impossible to turn on with one hand because you would have to maneuver the clip out of the way to access the switch. Plus, this will result in scratching the finish. The clip is tight and does not spin easily. I found this more trouble than it was worth and just do not carry the S2 in a way where it could accidentally turn on.

Add to your collection
All but one thing makes this one top notch, and this is subjective only. The Moonlight mode is just one notch to low. But otherwise a fantastic light. Shut up and just buy one…OK
ProsEverything but
ConsMoonlight mode one or two lux to low.

Would have been Favorite EDC... has annoying flaws
Without a doubt, an extremely useful and versatile light. However, It can easily self-activate, and it sticks to many metal items with its built in magnet -- including everything you do not want it to. A quick turn of the tail cap stops the unintended activation behavior, although doing so is hard because the fit is tight and the body is so thinly constructed. Multiple flaws on this guy. Beam is nicely diffused. Wonderful spread, not pinpoint focus like other lights. Heavy for an EDC due to 18650 but remarkable since the light body weighs very little. It wants to be a 5-star light, but it is too cheaply built to overcome its flaws.I replaced it with a Fenix and I still miss its wonderful diffuse beam.
ProsMyriad of functions, timer Diffused beam stands on tail, has a magnet on tail surprisingly small
Consself activates in pocket, no matter what position sticks to your keys or pocket knife etc (magnet)... annoying! thin, cheap body... tailcap hard to turn, stiff.

Almost perfect edc
This is truly a great little edc. The button works well, the operation is simple, and the blue ring around the bezel is elegant. Light output is near-perfect, with great spill. So much light from such a tiny package.
Proslight output is flawless Gorgeous build quality with good looks. magnet should come in quite handy. No rattling with 18650 installed.
ConsWish the activation button was metal or hard plastic rather than rubber. Wish the clip was reversible so it could be carried lamp down.

#1 EDC.
Hands down the best EDC light ever. As an electrician working long shifts this light is always in my pocket and works as long as I do. It can be used constantly in 80 lumen mode. Replaces my headlamp. Will clip to my hat and hardhat. Magnet is awesome for working in panels, under car hoods etc. I keep this light within reach at all times. I am never in the dark!
ProsClip- works on hardhats, ball caps & pocket. Magnet- works many other places. Size- small enough to be clipped in your pocket without being a uncomfortable. Big enough to not het lost easily. Runtime- 19 hrs @ 80 lumens, works through a 12 hr shift. Battery- takes an 18650 so its interchangeable with my bigger belt worn light. Always have a back up for either light.
