Olight S20R Baton

Now Rechargeable

Next up to get the refreshed, rechargeable treatment is the S20R, which for its size is very compact and powerful. Constructed from hard-anodized aircraft-grade aluminum, and measuring in at just over four inches and weighing under two ounces, the S20R is a true contender in the EDC category. Featuring a dual purpose magnetic tailcap, the S20R is able to attach it to any metal surface to be used as a worklight. It also attaches securely to the included micro-USB charging dock with the included double sided tape. The O-ring located in the bezel, glows-in-the-dark, giving you easy access to the light when in the dark. Dropping the S20R on the ground or in a puddle will not slow you down because the S20R is impact resistant up to 1.5 meters and is IPX-7 waterproof.

Lighting Technology

The S20R is equipped with the latest XM-L2 LED from CREE, which is able to push out a blinding 550 lumens. The multi-function side switch gives you access to the four output modes, including strobe. Strobe mode is accessed by double clicking the side switch when the light is on. If that is too much light, you can get into moonlight mode by pressing and holding the side switch when the light is off. The S20R will cycle from the 1 lumen moonlight mode, 5 lumen low mode, 120 lumen medium mode, and finally up to the 550 lumen high mode. Mode memory will bring you to the last used output mode, so they are no surprises.

Micro-USB Charging Dock

Powering the S20R is the included 2600mAh 18650 battery. You can also use two Lithium CR123A batteries as backup, bringing your true versatility. Reverse polarity protection will guard you against malfunctioning, in the event you improperly insert the batteries. Doubling as a battery power indicator, the side switch which will glow red when the battery runs low. When the time comes to recharge your battery, use the included micro-USB charging dock that magnetically snaps to the tail of the light to charge your 18650. The charging dock also includes USB port so you can charge another device while waiting for the S10R to recharge. Something to keep in mind is that when plugging the dock into a port on the side of a monitor or another kind of non-powered USB hub will not work.

Great little light!
August 17, 2015
So far I think it is great. The clip is one of its better features as it holds it right at the top of the pocket without it really sticking out too much, like the clip on most pocket knives. Its brightness-to-size is excellent, and is still small enough to comfortably carry every day. It is small enough to fit in a side leg pocket on a pair of Carharts, out of the way, but still easy to get to. It was this light or the S30R, and I am glad I went with this one, as it fits the pocket well. I may eventually get one of those also, as the light is well made. I thought the side switch may be a problem for pocket carry, but since the clip can rotate around the body, you can position it so the switch is not able to contact anything in the pocket. You can also lock the switch, but so far I have not felt the need to, and have had no accidental activations. The switch programming is good. It memorizes the last setting used and a single push brings it back to that. Regardless of what is in memory, a double press from the off position gets you to full brightness. A prolonged hold from off gets you to the lowest "moonlight" setting. Holding when on, steps thru the low, medium and high settings. The only way to get to the 4th setting, moonlight, is the prolonged hold from the off position, but holding from moonlight steps thru low, medium and high. Simple and easy to use! Charging base is convenient; when at my workbench, I drop it onto the base to keep the charge peaked. A higher capacity (3600) battery would make it amazing by adding 30% to all the runtimes. It would be nice if the charging base had an option to screw it down via the sticky base adhesive pad included. The magnet in the flashlight base is also not very strong. Would be a shame to lose such a wonderful light because the magnet didn't keep it where you put it. A stronger magnet would be useful, but then you would probably NEED to screw the charging base down to be able to pull the light off of it. So far, overall though, I am impressed.
  • Clip design, size and ease of use
  • Magnet could be stronger; would like to be able to more securely (screw) attach the charging base to something.

Faulty Switch

Great flashlight. Poor switch function. Turns off without warning, then you have to cycle through the settings to get back to the brightness you had before it went off. Does not reliably lock in the last brightness setting when charging. Otherwise good flashlight. Not reliable for critical use.

Better than expected!

Really surprised at the size. Very compact for an 18650 light. Can easily throw into any of my jacket pockets - something you can not do with a lot of 18650 lights.

Has been very durable - kids have dropped on concrete & works no problem. Also nicely spaced ratios. 5 lumen low won't blow your eyes out at night when your going to the bathroom. 120 lumen is great for general tasks. If you need to light up your backyard put it in the 550 lumen high mode & see everything.

Remember this light is a little more floody than throwy so keep that in mind. For an EDC light that is what I prefer. Comes with battery & charger. Don't have to take out battery to charge - just place it on charger. Great.
  • Compact & Lightweight, Nicely spaced ratios, Floody beam, Mode memory, Instant access to low or high mode. Battery & charger included. No need to remove battery to charge. Rear magnet so it can stick to metal surfaces.
  • Sometimes in dark it may be hard to find switch.

I carry an S10 daily. One of the features I find very valuable is the switch setting engaged when the light is in moonlight mode, if I hold the button, the lamp goes off and will not come back on if accidentally bumped. Does the S20 rechargeable have this same feature?
1 Answer
It sounds like you are referring to the lockout mode, and yes, the S20R does have a lockout mode.

How much would an extra charging base cost with a S20R order? Extra 18650 battery?
