The multi-function side switch allows you to cycle through the four output modes including strobe. You can access strobe mode by double clicking the side switch when the light is on. If that is too much light, you can get into moonlight mode by pressing and holding the side switch when the light is off. You don't have to worry about inserting the batteries improperly as reverse polarity protection will guard you against malfunctioning. The side switch doubles as a battery power indicator, which will glow red when the battery runs low. If you do happen to deplete the battery, use the included micro-USB charging dock that magnetically snaps to the tail of the light to charge your RCR123A.  The charging dock also includes USB port so you can charge another device while charging the S10R. Keep in mind, the charge port has to be plugged in to a powered USB port like a wall adapter, computer, or laptop.
