TerraLUX MiniStar5 (TLE-6EXB)

Powerful LED Upgrade for Maglites

You never forget your first flashlight, and for many of us that was a classic baton style Maglite. While times have changed and smaller flashlights are now able to put out tremendous power, that's no reason to leave our old favorites behind! The Terralux MiniStar 5 is a drop in that replaces old incandescent bulbs with a brand new LED that produces up to 140 Lumens of cutting edge lighting power! This LED upgrade works specifically with Maglite 2-3 C or D Cell flashlights.

The MiniStar5 is compatible with most generations of Maglite, however much older lights with "pin style" contacts will not work. Please refer to this illustration to make sure your light is compatible.

Features:
  • INTENSE BRIGHT LIGHT output comes from the ultra efficient 3 Watt LED which is estimated to output 140+ lumens at the emitter. The LED does not fade when it gets hot, so its light output is stable even after extended run times.
  • FOCUSABILITY. The MiniStar5 preserves one of the most outstanding features of the Mag Instruments™ line of flashlights, the ability to focus. The MaxStar5 produces a focused beam that throws a bright beam a very long distance.
  • LONGER BATTERY LIFE results from the higher efficiency of the LED compared to the standard bulb. This product contain the TerraLUX LED Light Engine, so it maintains a constant light output over the life of the batteries.
  • STANDARD MAX RUNTIME is 30 hours.
  • INDESTRUCTIBLE LED performance and lifetime operation. Unlike incandescent bulbs, LEDs do not just "burn out". This is likely to be the last bulb you will ever need to buy. The rated lifetime is 50,000 hours.
  • EASY TO INSTALL the MiniStar5 just replaces your existing bulbs - no modifications necessary!
  • Model: TLE-6EX EXTREME, TLE-6EXB 6EXB 6EXB 6EX

PLEASE NOTE: New version requires retaining ring from stock bulb. Directions are on package.

Good conversion
I didn't know if an LED conversion was available for an old MagLite. I just started looking online and found this one. A definite upgrade from the old incandescent bulb. Definitely recommend.

Consistent Beam
The new beam is consistent and doesn't have any "weak" spots around the perimeter. I was a little disappointed with the brightness. It's not any brighter than the original bulb. Overall, I like it and would recommend it... just wish it was brighter.

Easy and Effective Upgrade
This LED replacement bulb is a nice replacement for the original incandescent bulb. It is certainly brighter, and because it casts a very white light, it defines the targeted objects clearly. This is the second one I have installed in a 2 cell light, and find the battery life of both the "C" and "D" flashlights is substantially extended. So, along with the brighter / whiter light, this is a good value upgrade. The beam is still able to be focused, when it is focused into a single spot, the light is coherent and effective. But, when you spread the spot even a little, there is a hole in the middle and the resulting light is more of a ring than a "flood" effect. Since I always use it as a "spot" I don't find this to be a problem, but the user that needs a broad wide flood lighted area might be disappointed.
ProsBright. Extended battery life.
ConsDoughnut hole when focused into a flood light mode.

i have some of the old terralux up grades for my maglites,,,one of them stopped working so i thought i would try this,,,,if my old one was 140 lumens then this one has to be under or around 100,,,not nearly as bright,,,,but better than original bulb,,more bat life just was a little disappointed in the out put ,,,,easy to install and mag works fine with it
Proseasy to install,,,long bat life
Consyellow beam,,,,need more white bright light,,,,,,maybe i would be more interested in one with 180-200 lumens

New life for an old flashlight
Took me only a few minutes to change the old bulb out for this beauty, and what a difference! Bright white piercing beam that shines way out there. Haven't had a chance to determine the effect on battery life yet, but based on experience with other LEDs I expect good results. I recommend this to anyone with that old 2-3 cell Maglite sitting in a drawer.

Installation issues in Non-Maglite - Not a PR2 direct replacement
The body is larger in diameter (a little more than 1/8") than a standard PR2 bulb. I Installed this in an industrial 2 D flashlight that contains a spring that goes around the base of the bulb and rests on the flange. This product did not fit inside the spring and caused issues with the reflector. I was able to bend the spring and make it work, but this may not be possible with other flashlights. Once installed, the LED is much brighter than the previous krypton bulb, although the focus gives a bright ring with darker center. The color is very warm for an LED. Comparing to the Nite Ize 1W (74 Lumen) LED, The TerraLUX is brighter, but Nite Ize has a more uniform beam pattern. The Nite Ize base dimensions seems to match a standard PR2.
ProsBright Warm Color
ConsSignificantly larger than the original PR2 bulb Beam pattern has bright ring, dark center

Wasn't sure?
I just put the LED in my Mag-lite. The batteries are 5 years old (2010). The original bulb was very dim because of the old batteries, so I thought this is the perfect way to see how the new LED would perform. All I can tell you is the light is blinding. Even with worn batteries, the flashlight is usable again. Can't wait to see how it performs when the long dark winter hits us.

Great upgrade
I've had a 3 D cell Maglite for decades. Once I got some new two CR123 LED lights, I never used the old Maglite again, it's just too dim. I left it in a drawer. But I always wanted to use it, it's so well made and the billy club aspect can be useful. This TerraLUX upgrade is inexpensive, drops right in with no head scratching or fuss, and makes it pretty darned bright. Not like the newest 1000 lumen lights, but plenty bright enough to be useful. I'm completely happy with it; for cheap, it's like I have a whole new light.

This thing is bright
After reading several reviews, I felt there was a chance I would get a beam not much brighter than the original bulb. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised. I have no way to measure brightness, but this LED produces a beam noticeably brighter than the bulb. I was also happy to see that the focus function still worked. Since I just installed the upgrade, I have no idea how long it will last, but with a 1 year warranty, no worries.
ProsSuper easy to install, takes just a few minutes.

Great investment
Delivery was quick and the device just drops into the socket. What a great way to not only much improve the output, but to gain many more years of service from my dependable old Maglite.
ConsMaybe a tad pricey, but ultimately worth it, I think.

Better than incan, but not great
This might be 140 Lumers at best. I was a bit disappointed to find the tint on the yellow side and not cool white. It's a step up from incan and will give much more runtime and no more bulbs to break if the torch gets dropped or bumped against something.
