Does the LCD give you an actual voltage readout of the battery being tested?

Unfortunately, It does not give you actual voltage. It displays bars to show you whether the power is poor, fair, and good.

Does this work for NiMH and for rechargeable alkaline?

Yes, this battery tester is compatible with both Alkaline and NiMh batteries, though, Alkaline batteries are primary and aren't rechargeable.

Does this product test under load, or is it a no load tester only?

This battery checker gives a quick estimate of voltage. The ZTS checkers actually put the battery under load (which takes a second or so), then gives an estimated battery life.

Does this product test whether the battery is "dead' or working?

The LCD displays how much power is remaining in the battery. Columns 1-4 show that the battery is empty and should be recharged/disposed properly. Columns 5-9 show that the batty is with limited strength and should be recharged. Columns 10-18 show that the battery has adequate power.
