Good Replacement for my Original RadioShack Unit

"I have a need for constantly checking the state of charge on batteries. Most cheapo battery testers don’t put an actual load on a battery and therefore can give a false sense of the actual ability of a battery to run something. This unit does put a load on the battery as if it is tested “while working”. It makes a huge difference! I had a particular experience that will always drive this home for me. I was working on the movie ‘The Scorpion King’ as a sound technician and we had to put a radio mic on one of the actors, possibly the Rock (Dwayne Johnson), I can’t remember. The battery looked fine on a non-load battery tester, but the radio mic just didn’t fire up. We then checked the battery on a unit with capabilities like this one and you could see the needle drop from good to dead quite rapidly. Problem solved: Bad Battery!"

Affordable tool!

"I love this little thing - it's inexpensive and easy to use, and is good for so many applications. I currently have it stored with my watch repair kit and spare rechargeable batteries, but I will be picking up a couple more to put in my garage and also portable tool-kit, too. As with another reviewer, I've also made the blister-pack the tester comes in its own storage case."

Impressive small tester

"Sweet little battery tester that gives better readings since it adds/incorporates resistance. Nice sturdy plastic & clear analog display. Ability to test numerous types of batteries, even coin types. Cannot test the newer lithium ion rechargeable batteries like 18650,14500,16340, etc. Still better then a lot of other testers out there. Wish it had voltage readings though instead of good/bad."

Fun for the whole family

"It works well and the kids enjoy using it to test batteries as we have a lot floating around. The analog gauge makes it interesting for them as nearly everything else is digital. Simple and easy to use for the 5 and 7 year old!"

easy-to-read

"The Gemoro Econotester tests MANY varieties of batteries; even button batteries. First, turn the center switch to the type of battery to be tested. (see picture--it is set to 3v) Next, just touch the RED cable to the positive terminal and the BLACK cable to the negative. The screen--easy-to-read- shows the strength of the charge."

Good Buy

"So far I've found this tester is pretty accurate,It test most batteries and has place on the side for button batteries. It's a great way of knowing which batteries are still good and which ones to get rid of. I would absolutely recommend this tester."

Spock (5/5)

Fantastic tester

"I love this tester. . . It is more than worth the price and tests all kinds of batteries. I retested several batteries to see if it gave the same reading and it did, both good and bad everytime. . . . Excellent. . . Just hope it lasts a long time. . . ."

Simple and Works

"Simple to use and pretty accurate. (Checked against calibrated meter)"

Great Value

"The item works well and save's alot of money and concern on knowing whether your batteries are good or not. Would like to see a bigger letters describing the battery to be tested."

Nice economical battery tester

"I bought this battery tester because I have a large watch collection in addition to being at least an average user of all types of other cylindrical and wafer style batteries. It has an easy-to-read selector switch for the type and voltage and a big needle and well written instructions that cover all battery checking situations. This instrument is a big help in identifying what battery I need to purchase next without wasteful 'anticipatory' buying. It comes in a clear, tough plastic hang-tag card that can easily be modified into a permanent container that stores nicely on my workshop pegboard. This is great to have around the house to rule out dead battery issues with any device you are diagnosing or repairing. Two Thumbs Up."

Q&A

Does this unit put a load on the battery like the original Radio Shack 22-080, or is it just a useless open circuit calculation?
I see no indication that this tests a battery under a load. We do carry a brand called ZTS which does test the batteries under a load. They are significantly more expensive but are made to test under a load. We would recommend a ZTS-MBT-1
