The JetBeam PA40 Cree XM-L neutral beam flashlight is made for outdoor users who need a bright light in the darkness, but not too fierce of a beam. The neutral beam is color is closer to the sun's natural brightness, making it the preferable choice by hunter's because it provides long distance illumination, and it does not spook animals the way a cool beam would. A neutral beam also offers better penetrability, which makes the light perform better in fog or rain. Designed with daily use in mind, the JetBeam PA40 is a powerful tactical LED flashlight ideal for outdoor activities, enterprise applications, hunting, and security. It runs off four standard AA batteries (either alkaline or NiMH), which are inexpensive and easily obtainable. The PA40 achieves an impressive maximum output of up to 468 lumens and a runtime as long as 150 hours on low. It has 4 different brightness levels which can be selected by simply pressing the tailcap switch (the light does not need to be turned off to change modes). Its carbon fiber body is much stronger and more durable than ABS plastic, and it is still more lightweight. The PA40 also has an integrated tailcap power indicator and anti-slip hexagonal grip, making this high performance light ideal for all outdoor activities.

Good torch for the money but could be better
"My brother bought the Jetbeam PA40 in Cool White from BJ's recently. I thought it was a very nice torch, so when BJ's had a sale on Jetbeams, I couldn't resist. I didn't have any Neutral White beams in my collection so I thought I'd try the PA40 in NW. I was surprised at the difference in color rendition. Sure, the CW is a little brighter, but I think the ease in differentiating colors out-weighs the very minor lumen loss. I wrapped the black body in yellow grip tape to make it easier to find in the dark, as well as make it a little easier to hold onto. The carbon fiber is a bit on the slippery side. The torch does not tail stand very well. Instructions say it has Strobe feature, plus High, Medium and Low. It does not have Strobe. It has Turbo instead. I don't miss Strobe though. Cycling through the four levels can be a little tricky. You have to make sure you take off all pressure from the switch, otherwise, it doesn't cycle to the next mode. 2 lumens is on the low side to be really useful. I could go for 5-10 lumens for the lowest level instead. I saw a review in CPF from Aug 2011 on the PA40. It was sold in a nice, hard plastic case, had a paracord lanyard and nylon holster then. Now, it comes in a cardboard box, thin lanyard and no holster. It did come with a spare O-ring and switch cover though. Run-times are acceptable. With fresh Duracells, the red LED began flashing 3X after about 50 mins on Turbo, indicating 50% battery life left in that mode. Constant LED flashing occurred after another 25 mins, but Turbo kept going for 15 more mins. Turbo finally went out at about 90 mins, but then you can still use the three lower levels. Fully charged Eneloops lasted only half as long on Turbo. The PA40 does get a little warm while on Turbo, but even after twenty-five minutes on Turbo, what little heat coming from the lens is nothing. Prior to buying my the PA40, I used to use my Streamlight Propolymer 4AA for quick trips into the backyard to take out the trash at night and for nightly walks, but the PA40 puts the SL PP to shame. Much brighter and much more useful spill light. Like night and day, and at virtually the same size and same 4AA power source, the PA40 wins easily. (The SL PP doesn't tail stand very well either and has a tighter hot-spot. ) The PA40 could be a little better in my opinion, but you can't go wrong in adding one to your collection. I have no regrets in buying it."
Great all-around light
"I got this light a couple of years ago as one of my first modern LED flashlights. Compared to some other 4x AA lights out there nowadays, it does show its age a bit; however, it certainly gets the job done. I see this as a great utility light: it's too big to carry casually as you go about your day (EDC), and it's not quite bright enough or throws far enough for when you need a seriously powerful light. I'd say it's somewhere in-between. This light would work well around the house, in a tool bag, or out camping. The build quality is high and I see it as overall being worth the price."

"This light has a lot going for it. It is very bright on \'Turbo\' mode, and has 4 very useful brightness levels. It is well made, and yet lightweight. It has an IPX-8 waterproof rating. It lasts a very long time on good-quality NiMH batteries, even on Turbo mode. As for light quality, it has a good wide spill beam with a nice bright center spot providing good \'reach\'. For the most part the light produced is very neutral. The only problem is that there is annoying green-tinted band in the transition zone between the bright center spot and the wide spill. The center spot and spill area are a very neutral white. The green tint in the transition band shows up quite clearly in contrast with the neutral zones on either side. How annoying this is depends on the use. In a snowy landscape the green band shows up clearly and is quite annoying. In a forested landscape or at sea (in my sea kayak) it is not very noticeable. Were it not for this problem it would be close to perfect for my uses."
