One of the best features of the EA81 is that it uses a popular and widely available power source, eight standard sized AA batteries. This light can run on either regular alkaline, rechargeable NiMh or primary lithium power sources. "Great flashlight. I have several of the EA41 4 cell so this is very similar in function, but obviously longer as a 8 cell and twice as bright. The interface is easy to use and overall the EA81 balances nicely in my hand. Would highly recommend this if you're looking for a medium sized flashlight with a very bright output. If you want something more compact go with the EA41."
"Uo until this point, my brightest alkaline battery light was an older version EA41 at around 960 lumen. This EA81 destroys it! Its like a laser! "I have had this EA81 for a month now and it's a top quality light for sure. This is now my 4th Nitecore light and it works great, just like the others do. The switch buttons are a great improvement even for some of their other models. I bought (2) from Battery Junction when they were on sale, glad I did, my buddy got the other one the day it came in."
"I also own the predecessor Nitecore Model EA8, a 900-lumen, neutral-tint LED. The new EA81 is a definite improvement and in my opinion, well worth the extra cost. For approximately the same battery life, you get over double the lumen output, and a two-button switch. That switch is a big improvement over the single-button user interface on the EA8. The EA81 has one switch for power and another for changing the brightness settings. In addition, it is useful to have rapid access to the lowest mode (moonlight) and the highest (turbo—2,150 lumens). And I really like that it uses AA batteries. Most of my other emergency lights use them—a real convenience, particularly in places where CR123’s are not as easily available. The EA81 works well with Tenergy 2600 maH NiMH re-chargeable batteries. The throw for the EA81 is actually slightly less than the EA8, 490 meters vs. 462 meters. My brief nighttime testing showed little throw difference in actual use. However, the EA81 has a wider beam, filled with much more light. A small negative for the EA81 is a slightly-darker central doughnut artifact. It does not interfere with performance, but some users may this annoying. Also, the light is incompatible with Li-ion rechargeables and with Primary LiFePO4 batteries. Other users have reported that unlike the EA8 (which can operate with 4 AA batteries as well as 8AA’s), the EA81 requires 8AA’s."
"I was looking for a light that would cover basically any need, and this one does that perfectly. It does it all, and very well. I didn't think that the 1 lumen setting would be of any use, but it totally is. It is plenty bright enough to see to get around inside or out. And with it lasting 810 hours on 1 lumen, and 32 hours on 80 lumens, it is great for emergencies where you don't know how long you will be without power. If you need more light, this thing sure has it. At full power, it is blinding to say the least, making it a great defensive tool to disorient someone in the darkness, or as a search and rescue light. It is very well-built and feels like you have a quality tool in your hand. And to add to it all, it runs on the most common battery type around, the AA, and you have a light that covers all needs and can't be beat."
