This item never needs batteries since it features a built-in NiMH rechargeable battery. The Wagan Micro Dynamo works by simply attaching the female USB or USB adapter tips and then spinning the handle clockwise at 2-3 revolutions per second to generate the necessary power. For example, one minute of cranking can provide up to 15 minutes of light and 3 minutes of cranking can provide anywhere between 2-8 minutes of cell phone talk time, depending on the brand. Also, a DC output allows you to recharge older-generation cell phones if you do not own a smart phone.
