What are AA Batteries?

The AA (double-A) battery is a dry cylindrical cell defined by its roughly 49.2mm length and 13.5mm diameter. The AA has been the most common household battery for decades and fits a wide array of devices. While most batteries in the grocery store are alkaline with a 1.5V voltage, double-A batteries are available in many voltages, chemistries, and terminals (and some are even rechargeable).

Are there rechargeable AA batteries?

Yes, most rechargeable AA batteries use either NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) or NiCd (nickel-cadmium) chemistries. You can also buy 14500 li-ion batteries, which are the same size as AA cells.

Note that non-rechargeble double-A batteries typically have a 1.5V voltage, which may differ from most 14500 batteries (3.6V) and rechargeable NiMH AAs (1.2V). Always check with your device's user manual to see if a battery voltage, chemistry and terminal-type is compatible.

Do AA batteries expire?

Yes, all batteries eventually expire. AA batteries have a range of shelf lives between 3 and 20 years, wholly dependent on the battery's chemistry and storage conditions. What AA battery brand lasts the longest?

We don't play favorites at Battery Junction, and runtimes are often dependent on your device's battery drain and operating temperature.
